Professional Diploma in Interior Design

Program Overview

About the Program

The Professional Diploma in Interior Design is designed to meet the demands of this challenging and expanding field. It prepares learners for their first significant role—whether professional or academic—by developing a clear understanding of three-dimensional design analysis in both spatial and object contexts. The program places strong emphasis on creativity and imagination, encouraging students to approach design with depth, originality, and purpose.

The concept of lateral design is central to the program, where students explore projects at multiple levels using experimental and analytical problem-solving techniques. Through practical design projects and lectures, learners are introduced to the fundamental principles of interior design, including drawing, presentation, surveying, materials, construction, specifying, design context, history of design, visual research, and computer-aided design (CAD).

By combining creative exploration with technical understanding, this diploma equips students with the skills and confidence to enter the interior design profession or pursue further academic studies in the field.

Program Units (Mandatory 8 Units)

Explore creative drawing methods used in interior and 3D design. Develop visual thinking and expand understanding of form, space, and composition through experimentation with diverse media and materials. Strengthen your ability to communicate design ideas effectively while enhancing creative expression and technical skill.

Examine the cultural and historical contexts that influence contemporary 3D and interior design. Develop strong research and analytical skills through exploration of creative movements, materials, and ideas. Strengthen the ability to interpret, evaluate, and present findings effectively while forming a personal design perspective.

Explore the visual, functional, and structural qualities of furniture and its design processes. Develop an understanding of materials, construction methods, and manufacturing techniques across one-off, batch, and mass production. Gain practical skills in communicating 3D ideas through sketches, models, and prototypes, while learning the professional standards, health and safety, and responsibilities expected within commercial furniture design.

Develop the ability to communicate design concepts effectively in both 2D and 3D formats. This unit encourages learners to refine their visual presentation techniques, experiment with materials and media, and create a personal, distinctive presentation style. Emphasis is placed on clarity, creativity, and professionalism in showcasing design work to different audiences.

Explore the creative and technical processes behind transforming interior spaces for specific functions and purposes. Learners will develop spatial awareness, 3D visualization skills, and an understanding of how form, function, and aesthetics interact in interior environments. The unit also emphasizes professional collaboration, guiding learners to understand the responsibilities of interior designers working alongside other specialists. Through practical projects and visual presentations, students will learn to interpret briefs, propose design solutions, and communicate ideas effectively within a professional context.

Gain essential digital design skills through the use of industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, 3ds Max, and SketchUp. This unit introduces learners to the technology and tools behind modern computer-aided design, enabling them to create accurate 2D drawings, 3D models, and professional visualizations. Through a series of guided projects, students will learn how to design, edit, render, and present their ideas effectively using CAD software. By the end of the unit, learners will be equipped with the technical proficiency and confidence to integrate CAD into their design process, enhancing both creativity and efficiency in professional interior design practice.

Develop an understanding of the essential environmental and service systems that make interior spaces functional, efficient, and sustainable. This unit explores key aspects such as electricity, lighting, ventilation, heating, plumbing, and air conditioning within built environments. Learners will also examine topics like natural lighting, energy conservation, waste recycling, and the use of alternative energy sources to promote eco-friendly design practices. Through lectures, practical tasks, and real-world examples, students gain insight into planning safe, comfortable, and energy-efficient spaces while adhering to health and safety standards.

Gain the essential knowledge and skills required for specifying materials, finishes, furniture, and fittings used in interior design projects. This unit focuses on developing an informed and creative approach to material selection, emphasizing both aesthetic and functional qualities. Learners explore the properties and applications of different construction and decorative materials, external and internal finishes, and the sourcing of high-quality products. Through practical research and real-world exercises, students will learn how to specify, source, and order materials from suppliers while reinforcing their understanding of construction methods and material performance in professional interior design practice.
